Parts of the Body that Can Be Pierced
Deciding to get a new piercing can be exciting and scary all at the same time. Whether it’s usually visible or not, body jewelry can speak volumes about your individuality. Once you’ve decided to brave the scary bit – the needle, all that remains is where you want your new bit of body bling. However, there are a few things you need to consider before choosing where you want your next piercing. The first step you should take is to speak to your piercer. Tell them about your lifestyle, your profession and ask what to expect with a new piercing. It’s also important to let them know if you participate in any sports or other physical activities, like dancing or soccer. This is because some piercings may inhibit such activities. For example, a particular piercing may not be suitable for your work dress code or a piercing like an upper ear piercing may get in the way of wearing headphones or a helmet all the time. Read on to learn about what parts of the body are commonly pierced.
Popular Body Piercings
Ears: The ears are among the most popular piercings of all – especially the ear lobe. The ear lobe heals fast and is the one of the best places to get your first piercing. In fact, in many countries, parents have babies’ ears pierced when they are a few months old. You can also have multiple piercings on your ears, depending on the shape of your ears. The ‘helix piercing’ is a popular spot where the piercing is placed on your auricle, or outer rim of the ear. Other piercings include ‘conch piercings’ where the smooth part of your ear that makes up the back is pierced and ‘daith piercings’ where the folds near your ear canals are pierced. These piercings typically take longer to heal and require more aftercare than simple ear lobe piercings. Read this article to learn more about piercing aftercare, and dos and don’ts.
Nose: Another popular piercing is the nose piercing. Nose piercings usually refer to the piercing of the nostrils – at the thinnest part of the nose. You can wear studs, rings, or even barbels once the piercing has healed. Like earlobe piercings, nostril piercings also heal quickly provided you follow the aftercare recommended by your piercing specialist. Some people get their septum pierced. The piercing is carried out in the soft spot between the cartilage that divides the two nostrils.
Tongue: Tongue piercings are piercings done vertically through the tongue and are relatively discreet. However, not everyone can get their tongues pierced as prominent veins or a frenulum can make the procedure difficult or impossible.
Belly Button: Belly button piercings go through the top of the navel. The healing process varies individually, usually the jewelry can be changed in 8 – 12 weeks, while the full healing time is 6 - 8 months. Your piercer will recommend that you wear low pant or loose clothing throughout the healing process. Belly button piercings are easy to cover up if you have a dress code for work.
Nipple Piercings: Nipple piercings are another discreet piercing. However, they do have a long healing period. Women’s nipple piercings pass through the base of the nipple while men’s piercings are usually just under the base. You can choose the angle of the piercing once you have consulted your piercing specialist.
