How to Use Threadless Jewellery
The Ultimate Guide to Threadless Jewellery: How to Wear, Adjust, and Style It
If you’ve stepped into a piercing studio lately, you’ve probably heard everyone raving about threadless jewellery. Also known as "push-pin" or "press-fit" jewellery, this innovative design has completely revolutionized the body piercing industry.
Unlike old-school threaded jewellery that screws together (and constantly unscrews itself when you least expect it), threadless pieces rely on simple physics and tension to stay completely secure.
At BodyMods Canada, we want you to feel confident managing your style. Here is everything you need to know about how to use, adjust, and rock threadless jewellery.
What is Threadless Jewellery?
Threadless jewellery consists of two main parts:
- The Post (The Labret Stud): A hollow tube with a flat disc or ball on one end that sits inside your piercing.
- The Jewellery Top (The Decorative End): The pretty part you actually see (crystals, gold shapes, opals). This top features a small, solid pin protruding from the back.

How does it stay together? The secret is a tiny, intentional bend in the pin of the jewellery top. When you slide that slightly bent pin into the straight, hollow post, it creates tension against the inside wall. This tension locks the top firmly in place.
Step-by-Step: How to Use Threadless Jewellery
Ready to change your look? Follow these four simple steps straight from our BodyMods experts:
Step 1: Remove the Jewellery Top
Hold the flat back post firmly with one hand (using gloves or a piece of sterile gauze can give you a better grip). With your other hand, grip the decorative top and gently pull it straight out.
Crucial Tip: Avoid twisting! Threadless tops are designed to pull straight free. Twisting can warp the pin or irritate your healing piercing.

Step 2: Adjust the Pin (The Tension Secret)
If your jewellery top feels a little loose, or if it's a brand-new top that hasn't been bent yet, you need to adjust the pin before inserting it.
- To tighten the fit: Insert the pin about halfway into the post, and gently push the decorative end to a slight angle to give the pin a very subtle, permanent bend.
- Straight Pin = Loose Fit.
- Slightly Bent Pin = Secure Fit.
- Note: Only a very small bend is needed to create the perfect tension.

Step 3: Insert the Jewellery Top
Align the pin with the opening of the hollow post in your piercing. Once aligned, gently push the decorative top all the way in until it sits flush against the post. The fit should feel snug and secure without requiring excessive force.

Step 4: Check the Fit
Once inserted, give the decorative top a very gentle tug. If it moves too easily or feels like it could fall out, remove it and add a slightly stronger bend to the pin. If it stays put under a gentle tug, you are good to go!

Why Choose Threadless Jewellery?
There's a reason piercers and clients alike are obsessed with this style:
- Maximum Security: No more losing expensive ends because they unscrewed themselves while you slept.
- Ultimate Comfort: Threaded jewellery features tiny screw threads on the outside of the post, which can scrape the delicate inside of your piercing channel during insertion. Threadless posts are completely smooth, ensuring a seamless, irritation-free experience.
- Mix and Match Freedom: The best part? Threadless tops are universal! As long as the gauge matches, you can swap a single titanium post out for a variety of different gems, spikes, or solid 14K gold pieces in seconds without changing the post itself.

While threadless jewellery is incredibly user-friendly once you get the hang of it, changing jewellery in fresh or tricky piercings (like a snug conch or a forward helix) can be intimidating.
