Feelin' Nosy: breaking down nose jewelry

We're focusing on nostrils in this post - if you're looking for details on septum rings , click here .

With that out of the way, let's dive into nose studs!

First up is nose screws! These are most often the jewelry you'll get your nostril pierced with. The name comes from the “screwing” motion used to insert the piece. The hook on the end rests inside the nose, once inserted. They can be tricky to get in if you're a nose newbie, but they're also more difficult to lose a result- it's worth the trouble!
  • Our screws are available in 316LVM surgical steel, Bioplast (PTFE), and 14k gold.
Nose bones have a small ball on the end that goes inside your nose. They should pop in with ease. If you're worried about fitting the ball through your piercing, we recommend StretchAide. It's a water based lubricant designed to keep your piercings happy.
  • Additionally, our bones are available in 316LVM surgical steel, .925 sterling silver and 14k gold.

Nose pins are straight bars of .925 sterling silver. These are the easiest to put in and customize for the perfect fit! You put the post in your piercing, bend it and voila! You're done.
  • We also carry pre-bent nose pins in 316LVM surgical steel.
A labret– pronounced lah-bret, not lah-bray– resembles a barbell , but has a flat disc at one end instead of a bead . The other end has a threaded bead. They're most common in high nostril piercings. Though they're used in regular nose piercings too!

Wait, there's more nose jewelry? Let’s move to nose rings.

Starting with captive bead rings – AKA the CBR . For nose rings, the CBR will pretty much always be a pressure-fitted. This style has a bead with dimples on each side. The ring’s two ends pressing into the bead’s dimples holds it in place.
  • You shouldn't have any trouble opening and closing the ring by hand. If you're having trouble lining the dimples up with the ring, try wearing latex or nitrile gloves. They'll give you a better grip.

A segment ring is like a CBR in design, although it contains a curved segment of bar instead of a bead. This gives it a seamless look.
  • However, our segment rings start at 16g and most nostril piercings are 18g - you might have stretch for this to work.

A Bendable is a seamless ring with a small opening. Twist the ends at the opening away from each other to put it through your piercing. Once it’s in, twist back to place, and you’re done. The ring is annealed (a heating process that makes metal more flexible). This means you won’t need tools to put it in. Just don’t pull the ends apart to open it! This will warp your ring and can damage crystals and other decorative details.

The ¾ Hoop is literally ¾ of a hoop with a small disk at one end. It’s available in 18g or 20g – thin enough for the standard nose piercing. Starting inside the nostril, push the hoop through your piercing. Once in, the disk will keep it from pulling all the way through. ¾ hoops are a best seller because they’re so easy to get in. And that's a wrap for nose jewelry!
